If you can deal with the somewhat clunky controls and possible freezing issues, it’s worth a look. However, you can actually use the experience points that you gain from the kills you make to upgrade each character you turn into. It definitely has a few nagging quirks, but pays a fine homage to classic coin-op gameplay. Technical issues aside, Muffin Knight is sure to appeal to fans of simple, old school action. Internet play would have really added a lot to the overall game. 6 perks will bring you extra abilities during your quests for the muffins. The multiplayer is a great concept–adding a terrific competitive arcade feel–but unfortunately it’s local-only. Level up, unlock new characters and upgrade their abilities. This amount increases based on Rank and Rarity. There are currently only a handful of maps to unlock, but there’s plenty of incentive to keep trying each map for higher scores. Drops currently come in four types related to which rank the Hero is being upgraded: Humility - Ranks 2 and 3 Diligence - Ranks 4 and 5 Generosity - Ranks 6 and 7 Patience - Ranks 8 and 9 Tomes Main article: Tome Ranking up a Hero requires a certain amount of Tomes that match the Heros Alignment. So, if a muffin was right by a pitfall (like a fire pit), it inevitably meant a frustratingly uncontrollable death. There’s no control over transformations–it happens automatically–and the game would sometimes freeze just long enough to cause the knight to suddenly jerk forward. One issue that came up inconsistently during our testing was split-second freezing that occurred when the character changed form. This is the story of a little boy, on his journey to return the old fairy’s magical muffins. The controls feel a tad slippery, but are manageable overall.
